Aloha to Zen- Surfboards: robot skeleton

I was working from a different template on this one so I had to decide where to place the fins. I dug into the 'design library' and pulled out my best 3 performing boards. A 1978 Bob Mc Tavish shaped Sky twin fin, a 1980 Mark Richards (designed) twin fin and a 1982 Bob Hurley shaped twin fin. I measured up the fin placements and marked them out on the new board. Interesting to see the difference and the slight change in toe angle.

I took the best of all and went the average.

Jake and I are planning the next paint job already.

• To us, the innovation period was the most exciting period of surfboard design as surfers and shapers through off the shackles of conservative '70 surf culture and started experimenting with with all aspects of surfboard hydrodynamics. Shapers started experimenting with length, wide points, flex, twin fins, winged fins, thrusters and channel bottoms.

• At A to Zee we have ridden and tested all the boards in the collection and aim to replicate the best of what history and fashion as left behind.

• The boards we make by hand are all inspired by the best features of the boards in the collection.

• Our current favourites are the work of Bob McTavish from 1978 and Mark Richards from 1979.

• The boards are shaped and glassed by Damion Fuller and hand painted or decorated with original art work by Fern Levack or Jake Bird Fuller
